Poi is the Maori word for 'ball'. For hundreds of years the Poi has been an exciting and dynamic feature of Māori performing arts. Through the interaction of movement, gesture, and emotion the Poi is an extension of the performer and conveys a myriad of poetic meanings.
Poi also feature in important ceremonial occasions for iwi (tribal groups) and certain poi traditions also herald the rising of the star constellation, Matariki, for the Māori New Year.
Poi was also used by Maori women to keep their hands flexible for weaving and by the Maori men to build strength and coordination for battle.
Use these Poi to practice your own skills and have some fun.
